London has always been a city of commerce and a city of food.  The City of London Corporation’s wholesale markets, Billingsgate, Smithfield and New Spitalfields, have been at its heart for centuries and have adapted to the City’s changing needs for generations.  The City Corporation now has an opportunity to bring all three markets together for the first time at Dagenham Dock in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham to ensure that they can continue to serve future generations.

We welcome your comments at this important moment for the markets to ensure the proposals reflect the needs of customers and stakeholders.

What is the ‘Wholesale Markets’ project?

The City of London Corporation owns and manages London’s three principal wholesale food markets. Our aim is to co-locate all three markets to a new site in Dagenham Dock to create a significant new food wholesale location for London.

Our wholesale food markets are Billingsgate, Smithfield and New Spitalfields:

Food to represent each of the three wholesale markets. Fresh fish on display, Billingsgate Market, the UK’s largest inland fish market. An steak displayed on a hook at Smithfield, the world-famous meat and poultry market and boxes of fresh tomatoes on display at New Spitalfields, Britain’s premier wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market.

The City Corporation has a long and proud history of owning and managing these markets, dating back to medieval times. Located in the City for much of their history, today New Spitalfields is based in Leyton and Billingsgate is located next to Canary Wharf with Smithfield the only one still located in the Square Mile.

The three markets have so far always been located separately from one another. Our aim is to co-locate all three wholesale markets together in the same area, in order to create a 21st century wholesale food location for London and the UK.

Why We Are Consulting

The City of London Corporation wanted to hear your views on the plan to co-locate the three wholesale markets at Dagenham Dock.
