Overview

City of London Crest Logo

London has always been a city of commerce and a city of food.  The City of London Corporation’s wholesale markets, Billingsgate, Smithfield and New Spitalfields, have been at its heart for centuries and have adapted to the City’s changing needs for generations.  The City Corporation now has an opportunity to bring all three markets together for the first time at Dagenham in the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham to ensure that they can continue to serve future generations.

We welcome your comments at this important moment for the markets to ensure the proposals reflect the needs of customers and stakeholders.

What is the ‘Wholesale Markets’ project?

The City of London Corporation owns and manages London’s three principal wholesale food markets. Our aim is to bring all three markets together on a single site to create a significant new food wholesale location for London.

Our wholesale food markets are:

Food to represent each of the three markets

The City Corporation has a long and proud history of owning and managing these markets, dating back to medieval times. For a long time located in the City, today New Spitalfields is based in Leyton and Billingsgate is located next to Canary Wharf with Smithfield the only one still located in the Square Mile.

The three markets have so far always been located separately from one another. Our aim is to bring all three wholesale markets together on the same site, in order to create a world class wholesale location for London and the UK
