The City of London Corporation owns and manages London’s three principal wholesale food markets. Our aim is to co-locate all three markets to a new site in Dagenham Dock to create a significant new food wholesale location for London.

Our wholesale food markets are:

Visual showing fish on sale at Billingsgate, meat hanging from a stall at Smithfield, and boxes of tomatoes for sale at New Spitalfields Market

Should the markets relocate to Dagenham Dock, the existing Smithfield Market east and west buildings in central London will be given a new life in the heart of Culture Mile.

In January 2020, Studio Egret West architects were appointed by the City of London Corporation to lead on initial concept designs for possible new cultural and commercial spaces in the Smithfield East and West buildings and Rotunda.

The initial concepts can be viewed on the dedicated website for the Markets Programme www.wholesalemarkets.co.uk

Why We Are Consulting

This is the beginning of a conversation about the future of the Smithfield market buildings after their current use by the meat market. We’d like to hear your reactions to the initial concepts and possible interventions, and how they could contribute to making these historic buildings a future place for all Londoners.
